Wicked the Musical: Where are They Now? Kristin Chenoweth by Brian Sarna
Kristin Chenoweth’s career had been an up-and-coming sort since she graduated with a BFA in musical theater and a master’s degree in opera singing from Oklahoma City University in the early 1990s. She had participated studio recording of The Most Happy Fella in 1992, impressed stage audiences in Animal Crackers in 1993, and showing promise in the her own short-lived NBC sitcom in 2001, but it was not until her role as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, that the national audience really took notice of her.
The role earned her a Best Leading Actress in a Musical nomination at the 2004 Tony Awards (she lost out to fellow Wicked cast member Idina Menzel) and suddenly became an omnipresent force on the small and small screen. After leaving the cast of Wicked on July 18, 2004 she starred in the West Wing and received two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations and she portrayed Olive Snook in the cult favorite Pushing Daisies on the small screen. Chenoweth has become one of the most recognizable supporting characters in film, acting in The Pink Panther, RV, Running with Scissors, Deck the Halls, and Stranger then Fiction. She has even become a noted voice actor, lending her vocal talents to the animated series Sit Down, Shut Up as science teacher Miracle Grohe and the animated film Tinker Bell.
This year she has two more developments fans may want to keep track of. First, she is releasing her fourth album. Some Lessons Learned will be released September 13, 2011 through Sony Masterworks and will include a DVD with three videos: “I Want Somebody (Bitch About)”, “Lessons Learned”, and “The Making of Some Lessons Learned”.
Second, she will be returning to television in an ABC pilot as part of the ensemble cast for Good Christian Belles, originally entitled Good Christian Bitches. Chenoweth will play Darlene and the series will be a midseason replacement for the 2011-2012 television season. The sitcom follows a divorced Dallas mother of two returning to the city where she grew up.
It is also worth mentioning that Chenoweth will be starring in a movie set to be released in 2012. Family Weekend revolved around a 16-year-old girl who takes her parents hostage to teach them a lesson for their self-absorbed behavior and the lack of attention they give to their children. However, there is no official word yet on whether or not Chenoweth will reprise her role in the film adaptation of Wicked. Since the movie is due out in 2014 according to IMDB, I think there is a better chance of Wicked tickets being available for a reprise run on the stage than in the movie theater.

Teach Me Tonight $16.98 Aside from the music-loving Japanese, few countries have been up to the task of compiling the irrepressible Blossom Dearie. The British él label, however, offered a wonderful 2009 collection titled Teach Me Tonight that, while not the perfect first choice, offers an excellent companion to her self-titled 1957 debut (one of the best vocal LPs of its era). Included here are the complete contents of her second and third albums, Give Him the Ooh-La-La and Once Upon a Summertime, recorded at a pair of two-day sessions in early 1957 and 1958, respectively (oddly, the later date appears first). Verve head Norman Granz featured Dearie in her ideal setting, a small and tight rhythm section including, variously, Ray Brown on bass, Herb Ellis or Mundell Lowe on guitar, and Ed Thigpen or Jo Jones on drums. Although her debut remains the gold standard for Blossom Dearie LPs, these two are close competition, with Dearie providing her eccentric and intriguing interpretations of increasingly shopworn standards. As a bonus, the 25th track is a 1952 version of “Moody’s Mood for Love,” recorded with James Moody himself. ~ John Bush, Rovi Performers: Blossom Dearie – Vocals, Piano; Cecil Payne – Sax (Baritone); Ed Thigpen – Drums; Herb Ellis – Guitar; Jo Jones All Stars – Drums; Lem Davis – Sax (Alto); Leonard Gaskin – Bass; Merrill Stepter – Trumpet; Mundell Lowe – Guitar; Ray Abrams – |

The Music of Stars $14.38 The Music of Stars might sound like just a meaninglessly “poetic” title, but as a matter of fact, it’s merely descriptive of this strange and oddly compelling album, originally released in 2001. British composer and percussionist Morris Pert composed and recorded The Music of Stars as the first part of a loosely defined trilogy of releases sharing themes of distance and topography. The Music of Stars is quite literally a space rock album, except that instead of the sci-fi themes of Hawkwind or Pink Floyd, Pert took the amplified sound of the universe’s natural background radiation as his conceptual starting point. Basically, imagine if God had tinnitus. That ever-shifting tension between a maddening tuneless drone and otherworldly, celestial harmonies is at the root of The Music of Stars. These nine lengthy pieces, each named after a different distant solar object, unfold slowly and serenely, lacking anything as conventional as melody or rhythm. What keeps The Music of Stars from being mindless new age bliss-out music is the harshly-textured, dirty edge Pert gives much of the electronics, as well as the atonality and seeming randomness of his percussion parts. (Pert plays all the instruments, electronic and acoustic, himself.) Offsetting the quiet beauty of passages like the chiming, twinkling washes of notes that flutter across “Syrma” with sudden grinding buzzes and clatters reminds the listener that no matter how beautiful the starlit night is, that light is provided by far-off violent and destructive nuclear reactions. So yeah, it’s more than a little pretentious if you think about it too hard, but The Music of Stars remains an enjoyable listen. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: Morris Pert – Keyboards |

Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurs Court/Emperor Waltz $14.98 Two Bing Crosby classics, A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR’S COURT and THE EMPEROR WALTZ, on one DVD.A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR’S COURT: Bing Crosby stars in this light and lively musical version of Mark Twain’s timeless comedy. Der Bingle is a turn-of-the-century blacksmith who is knocked unconscious only to awaken in sixth-century Camelot. But thanks to some American know-how, the crooner is quickly hailed as a wiz of a wizard and granted the right to teach Rhonda Fleming, the King’s fetching niece, some decidedly contemporary romantic tricks. Alas, there’s trouble afoot when Bing locks magical horns with the all-powerful Merlin and is challenged to a joust by Sir Lancelot for the hand of the beautiful princess!Co-starring Sir Cedric Hardwicke and William Bendix, the classic fantasy also features a marvelous score by Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke, along with such hits as Busy Doing Nothing and Once and for Always.THE EMPEROR WALTZ: Just imagine: Viennese royalty, elegantly dressed ladies, dashing courtiers, and Bing Crosby in his old straw hat sharing the Danube and the court of Emperor Franz Joseph. It’s a recipe for sure-fire fun.Bing plays Virgil Smith, an American phonograph salesman whose fox terrier companion takes a fancy to the persnickety poodle of countess Johanna Augusta (Joan Fontaine). While some may call it puppy love, it turns out that romance is not just going to the dogs. Virgil’s openness and congeniality start to melt the icy coolness of the Viennese royal, who struggles with whether or not to dare defy convention in her tradition-oriented homeland. The lush scenery provides a gorgeous backdrop for the wooing and canoeing that take place in the land of blue rivers and Strauss waltzes. Add an element of good old American humor and Bing’s smooth sounds, and The Emperor Waltz is a delightfully entertaining trip to the musical wonders of old Vienna, Hollywood-style.Music, merri |

Early Girls, Vol. 2 $21.98 This is a delightful 28-track compilation encompassing solo artists, girl groups and male backing groups fronted by a female lead singer. This second volume plows turf similar to the first, with an emphasis on Hot 100 hits like “Tell Him” by the Exciters, “Our Day Will Come” by Ruby and the Romantics, “Every Beat of My Heart” by the Pips, “Bobby’s Girl” by Marcie Blaine, “A Thousand Stars” by Kathy Young, “Let Me In” by the Sensations, “Tonight You Belong to Me” by Patience and Prudence, and “You Don’t Own Me” by Lesley Gore. But just as important to the big picture are left-field delights like Barbie Gaye’s 1956 original of “My Boy Lollipop,” Rosie and the Originals’ Highland Records version of “Lonely Blue Nights,” Terry and the Tunisians’ “The Street,” Babs Tino’s “Forgive Me (For Giving You Such a Hard Time)” and Ann-Margret’s “I Just Don’t Understand,” replete with early fuzztone guitar, backup from the Jordanaires and harmonica from Charlie McCoy. Selections from Peggy Lee (“Fever”), the Raindrops (“The Kind of Boy You Can’t Forget”), the McGuire Sisters (“Sugartime”), the Bonnie Sisters (“Cry Baby”), April Stevens (“Teach Me Tiger”), and the Shirelles (“I Met Him On a Sunday”) round out this excellent — though wildly scattershot — package. ~ Cub Koda, Rovi |
